We’re grateful to have two of Carl’sįriends and musical associates, Mona Roy and Tim Bales, with us tonight to pay tribute to his genius musicianship, kind heart and quirky sense of humor which was always full of rapid-fire, hilarious-but-groan-worthy punsīorn in Harvey, Illinois in 1953, Tim Bales began playing the cornet in 1959 as a first-grade student in Calumet City, Illinois. Tonight we celebrate the memory of our dear friend and colleague, Carl Coan, with a concert featuring several selections he performed with us over the years. Within a few years of the joining the ensemble, Carl became part of the Moraine Valley music faculty where he taught courses in applied saxophone and jazz improvisation. Regardless of the reason, we’re certainly thankful that he continued to make a weekly, two-plus-hour, round-trip journey from his home in Michigan City, Indiana every Tuesday evening for the next twelve years to be with us. While we still scratch our heads as to exactly why such a tremendous player would want to stick around our rag-tag bunch of community jazz enthusiasts, indeed, something must have clicked because by the following fall he became a regular member of the group.

The Moraine Valley Jazz Ensemble invited Carl to first join us in concert as a featured guest artist in March 2008. As a devoted music educator, he shared his passion for music through his many private lesson students in Merrillville and South Bend, Indiana, as well as here at Moraine Valley Community College. During his career, Carl performed with noted jazz fusion groups Power House and Sonic Species, as well as with musicians such as Victor Wooten, Billy Dickens, Richie Cole, David Liebman, Frankie Avalon, Bo Didley, and Leslie Gore. Carl also provided solo transcriptions for David Liebman's Chromatic Concept book. Two of these books remain available through Hal Leonard Publishing. An accomplished author, he wrote three highly regarded anthologies of saxophone solos by two icons of jazz, Michael Brecker and John Coltrane. A virtuoso-level musician on both the saxophone and the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), his deep knowledge of his craft, technical skill and tremendous musicianship put him easily among the giants of the music world.Ĭarl attended Berklee College of Music and received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in saxophone performance from Indiana University – South Bend.

For those who were fortunate enough to hear him in his element unleashing a torrent of notes while navigating angular, rapidly evolving harmonies, along with a mischievous grin, there was no doubt one was bearing witness to something incredible.
